If you’ve ever looked into your attic and wondered whether it has enough insulation, you’re asking a very important question! Having the right amount of attic insulation can help reduce unnecessary heat loss, keep your home more comfortable, and potentially lower the amount of energy you use to heat it, which is always welcome when those Calgary winter bills arrive.
.. But it’s not always easy to tell just by looking, especially when homes have different insulation materials, depths, and previous upgrades.
For Calgary homeowners, attic insulation is commonly recommended at R60, but reaching that number isn’t simply about piling on more material. At SNUGG Insulation, we inspect first to understand what’s already there and how the entire attic is performing. In this blog, we’ll explain R-value, insulation depth, attic top-ups, and some signs your Calgary home may need an upgrade.
What Does R60 Actually Mean?
R-value measures an insulation material’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater its thermal resistance.
For attic insulation in Calgary, R60 is the current benchmark for ceilings below attics under Alberta’s building requirements. However, R60 doesn’t refer to one universal insulation depth. How many inches you need depends on the insulation type and its R-value per inch. That’s one reason why simply grabbing a tape measure and checking the depth only tells part of the story.
How to Tell If Your Attic Needs More Insulation
You may be able to spot a few clues around your home before you ever climb into the attic. Rooms that are difficult to keep comfortable, noticeable temperature differences between floors, drafts, or ice damming along the roof can all be signs that your attic insulation may not be performing as well as it should.
Inside the attic, insulation that looks thin, uneven, compressed, or has noticeable gaps may not be providing consistent coverage. Some materials, including cellulose, can also settle over time. The premium Johns Manville Climate Pro® fibreglass we use is designed not to settle and can fill around framing, corners, and other hard-to-reach areas for more consistent coverage.
Still, these signs don’t automatically mean you need more insulation. Moisture, ventilation, and air leakage can create similar comfort problems, which is why we prefer to inspect rather than guess.
If you live in an older home, we take a closer look at what an inspection can uncover in our guide to Why Older Calgary Homes Need an Attic Insulation Inspection.
Why We Use Premium Fibreglass Insulation
The Johns Manville Climate Pro® fibreglass insulation we use at SNUGG is designed for blown-in applications, allowing it to fill around framing, corners, edges, and other awkward spaces where consistent coverage can be harder to achieve. For Calgary homeowners, it offers several practical advantages:
- Maintains its R-value – Climate Pro® doesn’t settle like cellulose can, helping your attic maintain its insulating performance over time.
- Gets into tricky spaces – Loose-fill application helps cover small gaps, corners, and areas around framing without cutting and fitting insulation around every obstacle.
- Won’t rot or mildew – Inorganic glass fibres won’t rot, mildew, or deteriorate, helping the insulation keep doing its job over the long term.
- Formaldehyde-free – It won’t off-gas formaldehyde into your home’s indoor environment.
- Noncombustible – The fibreglass insulation is naturally noncombustible, meaning it won’t ignite or contribute fuel to a fire, adding an extra layer of fire safety to your home.
- Helps with sound control – In addition to slowing heat transfer, the insulation can help reduce sound transmission through ceiling assemblies.
When it’s installed to the appropriate thickness and specifications, Climate Pro® is designed to provide effective thermal performance for the life of your home.
Topping Up Existing Attic Insulation
An attic top-up involves adding new insulation over existing material to improve its overall thermal resistance.
If the existing attic insulation is clean, dry, and in suitable condition, a top-up may be a practical way to bring the attic closer to the desired R-value. If there is moisture, mould, pest contamination, or damaged insulation, however, covering the problem with fresh material isn’t the right approach.
At SNUGG in Calgary, we exclusively use Johns Manville Climate Pro® premium loose-fill fibreglass insulation for attic upgrades. Johns Manville Climate Pro® doesn’t settle under normal conditions, helping it maintain its R-value and performance over time. Because it’s blown in, it can also provide consistent coverage around framing, corners, edges, and other hard-to-reach areas throughout your attic.
There’s More to Your Attic Than Insulation Depth
Knowing how many inches of insulation you have is useful, but it shouldn’t be the only thing guiding an upgrade.
Before recommending attic insulation, our experts at SNUGG will assess insulation levels and condition, along with ventilation, moisture, air sealing, bathroom fan venting, and other potential problem areas. If warm household air is leaking into the attic or moisture isn’t being managed properly, adding insulation alone may not address what is actually happening.
It’s all part of looking at your attic as a system rather than treating insulation depth as the only number that matters.
