Calgary’s Current Home Insulation Requirements

The City of Calgary states that the National Building Code – Alberta Edition requires R22 (RSI 3.08) in wall cavities and R60 (RSI 10.43) in ceilings below attics.
For Calgary homeowners, reaching R60 is especially important when evaluating attic insulation. However, simply adding material until you reach the desired depth isn’t always the right approach.

Choosing the Right Insulation Material

Permit requirements depend on the project and installation method. According to The City of Calgary’s Permits for Clean Energy Improvements guide:
- Most conventional attic insulation does not require a building permit.
- Spray foam applied directly to the underside of roof sheathing requires a building permit.
- Interior wall insulation generally does not require a building permit.
- Insulation applied to the exterior of a wall may require a building permit.
- Interior foundation and rim-joist insulation generally does not require a permit.
- Exterior foundation or rim-joist insulation may require a permit.
Permit requirements may change when insulation work is part of a larger project, such as:
- A basement development
- A home addition
- An exterior renovation
- A secondary suite
- Structural work
- Changes to windows or doors
- Mechanical, electrical or plumbing work
